Osterville Cottage Revised

Osterville, Massachusetts

Homeowners originally reached out about their 1960s-style Osterville summer cottage after a flash flood had ruined the lower level of the residence, filling a below-grade garage with water and junking their prized automobile. The personality and character of the original house were indubitable; with an inviting farmer’s porch and a gracefully swooping roofline, there was much to celebrate. The drainage issues, however, had to be addressed in order to ensure the structure’s viability. In addition, a steeply sloped lot needed to be reconsidered.

A new at-grade carriage house is linked to the main home via a stepped-down connector wing. Not only does the carriage house provide much-needed functionality, it gracefully hides a complete aquatic program from street view.
