The Sydney Hotel
Edgartown Historic District, Massachusetts
Three years after opening The Sydney, owners of the eight-room inn wanted to expand and refresh the 1892 structure. They commissioned a renovation plus a separate sixteen-guestroom building that would connect to the original hotel via a courtyard. The goal was to root the new architecture in the historic downtown, stretching the vibrance of that area onto a secondary street.

To meet these goals, a shingle-style aesthetic was designed that draws inspiration from the original inn, echoing its scale and gabled rooflines. Edgartown’s brick sidewalks and white fences entice guests to the courtyard which now functions as a lively alfresco cocktail area.
