Woodcliff

Wellesley, MA

With an ideal location in Wellesley’s desirable Cliff Estates neighborhood, this 1935 residence retained much of its original charm. Details like an original slate roof, unique gabled peaks, and exposed stone tugged at the heartstrings, but the interior program was less than ideal for modern times.

A total renovation and augmentation – sensitively completed – allowed the house to retain its character while gracefully expanding the property and entirely reconfiguring the floor plan. No wall was left untouched in the comprehensive project, yet the resulting residence leaves one wondering what was original and what was built anew.

In particular the rear of the property features indoor/outdoor connection where none had previously existed. The living room, kitchen, and garage wing each now open to a brick and bluestone patio featuring fire and water features along with areas for gathering, cooking, and dining al fresco. The result is a residence that decidedly lives for today while being firmly and proudly rooted in the past.
