Clients had purchased a petite home in a prime location within the Edgartown Village Historic District. Originally built in the 1840s, the house lived for yesteryear and needed to be preserved. The new owners, however, desired a larger, modern program with higher ceilings, open spaces, and indoor/outdoor living opportunities ideal for a summer home.
The creative solution involved lifting the original structure off its crumbling foundation and placing it onto a newly poured extra deep foundation beneath. Within this lower level, a program with significant square footage was added which feels anything but below grade thanks to soaring ceilings and expansive window wells.
In the rear of the property, a new open wing was added with family gathering spaces featuring cathedral ceilings and a modern bifurcating door that opens the living room entirely to the bluestone patio and aquatic program just beyond. A cabana bookends the pool, serving as a getaway space on the property for gathering away from the main house’s action.
