This home occupies a high knoll on Chappaquiddick—the island off the east coast of Martha’s Vineyard—overlooking Edgartown Harbor and Cape Cod. The goal was to turn various pieces of the property’s existing, relatively charmless 1970s cape-style building into a larger residence that felt more of its place.
Reconceived as a classic “Chappy” vernacular home, the residence now looks like it was expanded over the years, with a once-separate barn incorporated into the main living space and another barn-like building serving as a freestanding carriage house. A local rural vernacular defines its scale and flavor, enhancing the sense of authenticity and nostalgia.
