South Water Street Revisited

Edgartown Village Historic District, MA

This 1840s Greek Revival home, known as Nunnepog House, didn’t take advantage of its potential sea views and struggled to accommodate summertime guests. A significant but subtle reimagining—featuring an added wing, a walk-out garden level invisible from the street, a carriage house, and reconceived landscaping—now encourage indoor-outdoor living.

Major innovations inside included removing the first-floor ceiling to create a double-height great room without changing the house’s appearance from the street. The windowed dining room off the great room was styled to look like a former open-air porch that was eventually enclosed with glass—an architectural narrative typical of the Vineyard.

The renovated house and new landscaping provide abundant opportunities for alfresco activities. An enchanting secret garden sits just outside the master suite, and a guest suite enjoys its own private patio. The covered porch off the great room features a fireplace, and an extensive patio surrounds the pool.
