Morse Street House & Carriage House

Edgartown Village Historic District, MA

Completed more than twenty years ago, this new-build Greek Revival home and street-side carriage house comprise one of the firm’s earliest projects in Edgartown. They evidence many of the signature elements and characteristics that define the equally timeless and historically appropriate projects that have since followed.

The main house, which takes inspiration from Edgartown’s white-clapboard-fronted eighteenth-century captains’ houses, looks like it was added on to over time, with its program broken into pieces across several volumes. It then incorporates farmhouse elements—including a front porch and a carriage house—to lend it both an urban and pastoral feeling.

The street-side carriage house’s Dutch door and pedestrian portal offer only a glimpse of the main residence’s front door from the road. This turns the yard, gardens, and swimming pool into a completely private oasis, one perfect for outdoor entertaining all summer long.
