Atlantic Drive 2

South Beach, Edgartown, MA

Like the rest of the firm’s five “upside-down” houses on Atlantic Drive on South Beach, this vacation home required its central living spaces to be upstairs, rather than the more typical ground level, to take advantage of ocean views over South Beach’s dunes. The owners also requested a design referencing their residence in Vermont.

The new-build home blends the look of a Vermont country house and a Vineyard cottage, incorporating a heavy-timbered aesthetic lightened by nautical colors. Gambrel roofs and floor joists sunk into foundations increase ceiling heights, accommodating the tall clients’ stature without sacrificing the home’s intimate character and balanced proportions.

The house encourages outdoor entertaining. The family room opens to both a covered porch with a fireplace and a screen porch, beyond which lies the pool. The pool cabana—modeled after the main house—incorporates a changing area, a bathroom, and storage. It also features an outdoor gathering area with a fireplace, reinforcing the beachfront feeling.
