An Exterior Spring Cleaning

03.30.2023

The old adage is certainly true when it comes to home maintenance: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. At the start of the spring season, we advise clients to assess their home’s exterior, making note of areas that need attention so larger issues won’t surface later on. Below, our tried-and-true checklist for an exterior “Spring Cleaning” that will improve your home’s curb appeal and make for an inviting exterior environment for your family to enjoy in the warmer months ahead.

Around Your Property

  • Inspect driveway for freezing/thawing damage
  • Assess walkways for movement in stone and deterioration of jointing sand or filler stone
  • Check pergolas and fences for rot
  • Review tree limbs and bushes around the home; some may have been damaged during hard winter months
  • Remove holiday plantings from window boxes and refresh with seasonal blooms
  • Add potted plants to entry and outdoor living spaces
  • Replace candles in exterior hurricanes and lanterns
  • Make a list of to-do’s that a handyman may be able to complete

On Your Home’s Exterior

  • Remove window screens and clean with vacuum brush (alternately, spray with a garden hose)
  • Wash windows inside and out; best to do on a cloudy day
  • Clean gutters and downspouts as the first defense against costly water damage Touch up paint and stain on exterior woodwork Scrub accumulated grime from outside of garage doors
  • Replace bulbs in outdoor lighting, clean fixtures as needed
  • Schedule roof maintenance and consider power washing slate

For Decking, Porches, & Patio Areas

  • Clear away cobwebs from corners and ceilings
  • Inspect wood for signs of decay and make needed repairs
  • Power wash deck and porch
  • Apply a coat of sealer to deck
  • Wash bluestone to remove debris or mold
  • Clean outdoor furniture (if stored, brush away dust; if left outside, spray with a garden hose)
  • Replace furniture cushions as necessary
  • Wash grill grates without using wire grill brushes – instead, choose safer options
  • Refill tanks for grills that run on propane
