West Chop Waterfront

West Chop, Vineyard Haven, MA

Set on the dirt-road extension of the area’s main street, this property feels worlds away from the village, even though it’s actually quite close. The acreage of gently rolling marshland and broad ocean views suggest a truly pastoral, slightly wild atmosphere. The house responds to these natural cues.

The existing house consisted of a central element and several too-long wings. The center piece was gut renovated, and the wings were removed and rebuilt to provide more modern, livable interior space. Their shingled exteriors, however, appear entirely of a piece with the home’s original 1930s vintage.

Appropriate to the rural-feeling setting, the residence maintains its rambling aesthetic, but new vertical elements—including dormers and chimneys on both the central piece and the wings—balance the horizontality. The overall low-lying nature of the home allows it to blend seamlessly into the landscape.

Inside, the reorganized floor plan creates a more formal sense of arrival, the front door opening to an intimate foyer followed by a grand double-height living room. From here, private spaces extend to the left and public ones to the right, all along a central spine that establishes easy, seamless flow.
