Profile in South Shore Magazine
South Beach, Edgartown, MA
This new-build gambrel-roofed home was designed as one of the firm’s five “upside-down houses,” on Atlantic Drive on South Beach. The house is referred to as “upside-down” because its main its main living spaces, which open to expansive decks, are all on the second floor, maximizing their ocean views, while the ground-floor bedrooms enjoy direct pool access.
The home was carefully sited parallel to the coast, with the wing containing the carriage house and master suite projecting at a particular angle. This allows it to capture the property’s breathtaking sunset views out to the cliffs of Aquinnah, without causing residents to look into a neighboring house.
Classic details—including inlaid floors, carved spindles, and mahogany banisters—give the interiors the authenticity of age. Of particular note is a study tucked away under the third-floor eaves. Its floor-to-ceiling mahogany, eyebrow dormer, and ocean views make it feel like the captain’s quarters on an impeccably restored vintage yacht.
